In 2011 I was gifted a scholarship by my Yoga Teacher to the 5 Day Yoga Purpose in Action Training with Off the Mat, Into the World. To be honest, I had no idea what I was getting into. I wanted to travel and teach yoga so the name intrigued me and I said yes. My teacher had selected me to assist her in teaching OTM’s Yoga in Action Program. My flight was delayed and I missed the first night of training but I jumped in early the next morning and the rest is history!
What is Off the Mat, Into the World?
Seane Corn, Hala Khouri, M.A., & Suzanne Sterling are internationally known for their yoga practice as activism work. Committed to conscious, sustainable social change, the trio launched OTM in 2007 as a global community-focused leadership training organization for activists. Through leadership intensives, workshops, and online courses, Off The Mat Into The World supports yogis in becoming conscious and effective community leaders, covering topics like social justice, sustainable activism, embracing differences while connecting with our passion and purpose, by linking embodied practice with effective social and environmental justice work.
So, after training, I co-facilitated a seven week Yoga in Action program with my teacher and our students raised money for the local Rotary Club. It was such a sweet and amazing experience. I began learning just how much more there is to yoga than shapes on a mat. I embarked on the Seva Project to raise money for Haiti in 2011 with the OTM. I organized a number of fundraisers and yogathons and raised a couple thousand dollars!
I was inspired to go on my own travels and to live my purpose and passion. A few months later I found myself in Fiji teaching yoga and traveling the South Pacific! After 3 months abroad, I returned to North Carolina and taught Yoga in Action in Winston Salem, NC. Since then I have plugged the aspects of OTM into my Yoga Teacher Training and brought purpose, passion and service into the yoga community.
Look for more opportunities to embark on your own journey of purpose and passion, to attune yourself with your dharma and to live a life of service. Check out the community classes that are a part of K10Yoga Outreach, a branch that has come from this work. Yoga in Action Workshops are coming to Winston Salem in 2018.
